The authors argue that comprehending the combined effects of these components is essential for fully understanding the therapeutic potential of cannabis.

The study emphasizes what many experts in the field have long advocated—the significance of not just THC and CBD but also the intricate interactions among cannabinoids, terpenes, flavonoids, and other molecules in what is known as the “entourage effect.”

The research team, comprising seven authors, highlighted the historical oversight of cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids in cannabis science. They stressed that emerging evidence suggests these constituents, particularly cannabinoids and terpenes, play significant roles in interacting and collaborating, contributing to the diverse effects observed among different cannabis strains.

According to the study, a nuanced examination of the specific ratios of cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids in various cannabis strains or products can pave the way for personalized medicinal interventions, enhancing therapeutic outcomes.

Both cannabinoids and terpenes interact with the endocannabinoid system and exert various effects on the body, including analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective actions. However, the study emphasizes that their effects are not solely attributed to their individual actions but are modulated by other compounds in the plant.

Terpenes, for example, not only possess pharmacological properties but can also influence the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of cannabinoids, potentially enhancing or modulating their effects. The concept of the entourage effect suggests that the combined action of cannabinoids and terpenes may produce a synergistic or additive therapeutic effect greater than the sum of their individual effects.

While research into flavonoids is relatively limited, studies suggest their anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and neuroprotective properties. Specific flavonoids, such as cannflavins, have shown potent anti-inflammatory effects, particularly in neuroinflammation.

The study sheds light on the complex web of chemical interactions influencing marijuana’s effects on individuals, underscoring the need for focused investigation into the synergistic effects and underlying mechanisms of cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids.

Studies have also highlighted the importance of diverse cannabinoid profiles in producing more potent and longer-lasting psychoactive experiences, as well as the potential benefits of plant-based CBD extracts compared to purified CBD products for patients with epilepsy.
