CBD or cannabidiol is said to do everything from soothing anxieties to easing pains. It is basically in every product; body salves, lip balms, and even dog treats. What is so special about CBD that companies are putting it in everything?
The cannabis plant produces thousands of compounds of which CBD is one. A member of the class cannabinoids that also include THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), the psychoactive compound in marijuana that gets people high. CBD doesn’t possess the same psychoactive effect as THC but it is believed to have therapeutic properties. This is in addition to some sort of body euphoria and mental buzz.
A wide range of conditions from epileptic seizures and insomnia to pain and inflammation has been credited to have been successfully treated using CBD. In 2018, the FDA approved a CBD-based drug called Epidiolex. It is for the treatment of severe forms of rare childhood epilepsy and is also the first government approved medical use for CBD.
Scientists in Australia during a wide range of tests on CBD discovered that it killed all strains of a powerful bacteria tested. They believe that CBD is a promising new antibiotic worth investigating further. According to Dr. Esther Blessing, an assistant professor at New York University School of Medicine who is coordinating a study of CBD as a treatment for post traumatic stress disorder and alcohol use disorder, “CBD is the most promising drug that has come out of neuropsychiatric diseases in the last 50 years”.
CBD in its most basic form is found in capsules and oils. Once, CBD was only used as a supplement that people could use in food or swallow whole. Today, there are CBD-infused products everywhere, from toiletries and beauty items to foods and pet care.
Users of CBD-infused beauty care products have listed a number of positive effect it has had on them. For example, customers have reviewed that the bath bomb helped with after-exercise aches, pains from autoimmune disorders, arthritis and joint pain.
The reviews from pet owners follows the same pattern. Pets like cats and dogs that saw their treats mixed with CBD saw the animals showing positive reactions.
CBD products are projected to become mainstream and would be in supermarket shelves everywhere. There’s a long line of people who are waiting to try out CBD products.
